I paid $15 to go to dinner with a bunch of strangers. I didn't know who I was meeting, where we were eating, or whether we'd even have anything to talk about.
And somehow, it turned into one of the most enjoyable Wednesday nights I've had in a while.
Let me explain.
The Dinner Club Experience
I recently signed up for the GwinnettBest Dinner Club, a local experience built around a pretty interesting idea: What if you let someone else choose your dinner companions and your restaurant?
Here's how it works.
You sign up, pay about $15 for the experience, and complete a questionnaire about your food preferences, personality, and social interests. Based on your answers, you're matched with a small group of people for dinner.
The catch? You don't know who you're dining with, and you don't find out which restaurant you're going to until the morning of the event.
You simply show up, pay for your own food and drinks, and see what happens.
Now, anybody who knows me knows I love a good adventure. Give me something unexpected, a little mystery, and the possibility of discovering somewhere new, and I'm probably interested.
So, naturally, I signed up.
Seven Women, One Table, and Absolutely No Awkward Silence
When I arrived, I discovered that my dinner group consisted of seven women, all around my age.
And y'all, we had the BEST time.
I'm talking laughing, sharing stories, swapping experiences, and having the kind of conversations you'd normally expect from people who've known each other for years.
You genuinely would never have guessed we'd all met about two hours earlier.
What I appreciated most was how natural everything felt. There was no forced networking, no awkward icebreakers, and no pressure to make the evening into anything more than a good dinner with interesting people.
Just seven women enjoying each other's company.
As adults, I think we sometimes forget how refreshing it can be to meet new people outside our usual circles. Especially when there's no particular agenda beyond showing up and enjoying yourself.
The Food: Seaside Oyster Bar in Suwanee
Our surprise restaurant was Seaside Oyster Bar in Suwanee, Georgia.
And this was a great choice for our group.
Because it was a Wednesday evening, the restaurant was relatively quiet. The atmosphere was cozy and intimate, which made it easy for everyone to hear each other and enjoy the conversation without competing with loud music or a packed dining room.
The service was excellent, and so was the food.
Now, the absolute highlight of my meal was the Island Ribeye.
I ordered my steak island-style, with a savory ginger-soy marinade that gave it the most incredible flavor. Seriously, I wish I'd gotten a better photograph because that steak deserved its own little photoshoot.
It was THAT good.
We also had a beautiful assortment of seafood, appetizers, and desserts around the table. Between the food, conversation, and relaxed atmosphere, the evening came together beautifully.
And I'd absolutely return to Seaside Oyster Bar for another meal.
But Wait, There's an After-Party?
One of the other fun parts of the Dinner Club is that your table isn't the only group participating.
There were several other groups dining at different restaurants around Suwanee that same evening, all having their own mystery dinner experiences.
After dinner, everyone had the option to meet at a designated local bar or lounge.
Think of it as a little after-party where you can meet the other participants, compare experiences, and keep the evening going.
Of course, I had to stop by.
I stayed for about 20 to 30 minutes, met a few more people, and enjoyed seeing the larger community that had participated.
But eventually, I had to be realistic. It was getting late, and I still had a 30-something-minute drive home.
The responsible adult in me finally won that argument.
Would I Do It Again?
Absolutely.
For about $15, plus whatever you spend on dinner, I think this is such a fun way to shake up your usual routine.
You might discover a restaurant you've never tried, meet someone you'd never otherwise cross paths with, or simply spend a few hours having a really good time.
There's something wonderful about allowing yourself to be surprised.
Not every adventure requires a plane ticket, an elaborate itinerary, or an expensive weekend getaway.
Sometimes it just requires saying yes to something a little different on a random Wednesday night.
And honestly? That's exactly the kind of living well I'm here for.

You never know who might be waiting at your table.
